Mohamed Assani - Musician & Educator

Higher Education and Training

Mohamed's students in performance

Mohamed is currently a visiting lecturer in Indian Music and Ensemble Technique at the University of Huddersfield. He is available for higher education teaching in Indian music, improvisation, world music and Indian music onto Western instruments. He also delivers teacher training (inset days), including PGCE, for trainee music teachers wanting to learn techniques for bringing world music into the classroom.

"I feel that what we have achieved in a short space of time is amazing. We are all new to this way of performing and have all gained a lot from it. Our teacher, Mohamed Assani, has been a great inspiration and introduced me to a whole world of music I may never have explored."

Jeff Dale, Music Student, University of Huddersfield

"Two years ago Mohamed Assani started running a series of workshops for us in South Asian music. A mixture of people from the local community and undergraduate music students have been taking part in regular classes ever since with fantastic results. Mohamed has managed to cater for people with no experience as well as those who have been playing for a long time, from all sorts of backgrounds. He has taught tabla and sitar, as well as running an ensemble that mixes traditional techniques and western instruments. He has helped us buy the right instruments and develop a programme of high quality classes and performances. I was amazed at the first concert we held at how far students had developed in a relatively short period of time. Mohamed had really done an excellent job of teaching a very complex musical style to those with no prior experience of it. He has also worked for us in schools on community projects, and has always worked in a very professional fashion. I never have to worry about the work he does as I know it is always going to be excellent. His knowledge of the music, of playing styles on various instruments, of how to approach performances and rehearsals is very strong and if you get the chance to work with him I recommend you grab it with both hands!"

Dr. Rupert Till MA HEAM, Senior Lecturer in Music, University of Huddersfield

"Mohamed is an inspirational speaker and musician who is able to give our PGCE Music trainees a real insight into Indian Classical Music. His knowledge and understanding of Western music enables him to approach the subject from the trainees perspective and as a result the trainees feel able to teach Indian music in the classroom with secondary pupils. The trainees thoroughly enjoy his visits to us."

Jayne Price, Senior Lecturer and Music Education Co-ordinator, University of Huddersfield
